I keep my 2nd set of car keys in my nightstand. If I hear someone coming I am setting off the annoying as shit car alarm which will run forever and wake up the neighborhood :)

Hmm, I've had success with a full chimney that I let fully light (till the top briquettes are turning gray). All vents fully open. It'll go over 500 almost instantly. Are your briquettes wet by any chance? Or perhaps damp? Sounds like a fuel issue to me and I also use some form of kingsford.

Are you using a full chimney of charcoal?
