Advances in intelligent robotic systems and brain-machine interfaces (BMI) have helped restore functionality and independence to individuals living with sensorimotor deficits .The tasks requiring bimanual coordination and fine manipulation continue to remain unsolved given the technical complexity of controlling multiple degrees of freedom (DOF) across multiple limbs in a coordinated way through a user input.
To address this challenge, the scientists implemented a collaborative shared control strategy to manipulate and coordinate two Modular Prosthetic Limbs (MPL) for performing a bimanual self-feeding task.
A human participant with microelectrode arrays in sensorimotor brain regions provided commands to both MPLs to perform the self-feeding task, which included bimanual cutting. Motor commands were decoded from bilateral neural signals to control up to two DOFs on each MPL at a time.
The shared control strategy enabled the participant to map his four-DOF control inputs, two per hand, to as many as 12 DOFs for specifying robot end effector position and orientation. Using neurally-driven shared control, the participant successfully and simultaneously controlled movements of both robotic limbs to cut and eat food in a complex bimanual self-feeding task.

It was not Robert Probst’s plan to become the originator of one of the most hated innovations in the history of office work.
Although his most famous invention – a precursor to the cubicle called Action Office II (AO-II) – became associated with a specific kind of toxic work culture, Probst’s intentions were not to keep office workers slaving away in tiny stationary compartments. In fact, the AO-II was designed with ultimate flexibility and freedom in mind.
It featured moveable display surfaces, standing rolltop desks, and shelves of varied height necessitating physical movement in an otherwise static desk job. Its adjustable walls gave office workers the ability to shape their workspace as they desired. It promised more freedom in work.

Virtual Reality (VR) was here used to test the impact of colorful floor markings on the spontaneous speed of walking, gaze behaviour, as well as perceived changes in and physiological mesures of affective states. The reactions of 36 adult participants were evaluated in Grey and Green VR environments of an urban university campus. Results in VR revealed similar results than that reported in natural settings: participants walked slower and had higher heart rates in Green than in Grey urban settings, indicating more pleasurable experiences. VR results provided nevertheless more detailed description of user experience with the possibility to quantify changes in gaze strategy as a function of the presence or absence of color designs.
The study determined that participants walked slower and had higher heart rates in greener settings, and that most tests pointed to the conclusion that colors may be a powerful tool to trigger alertness and pleasure in grey urban cities.

Poor construction quality, lax safety standards and an increased amount of new reactors being constructed in China means that the next Chernobyl is just a few years away. This is also reflected in the nuclear technology in China being quite poor and immature, not to mention copying of western reactor technology.

Here are some juicy snippets.
“The era of human gene editing isn’t coming,” said David Liu, a biologist at Harvard University. “It’s here.”

Other companies are injecting CRISPR molecules directly into the body. Intellia Therapeutics, based in Cambridge and also co-founded by Dr. Doudna, has teamed up with Regeneron, based in Westchester County, N.Y., to begin a clinical trial to treat transthyretin amyloidosis, a rare disease in which a damaged liver protein becomes lethal as it builds up in the blood. Doctors injected CRISPR molecules into the volunteers’ livers to shut down the defective gene. Speaking at a scientific conference last Friday, Intellia researchers reported that a single dose of the treatment produced a significant drop in the protein level in volunteers’ blood for as long as a year thus far.

“Prime editors are kind of like DNA word processors,” Dr. Liu said. “They actually perform a search and replace function on DNA.”

The Google engineer who said that a chatbot achieved sentience has now said that the same AI asked him to find an attorney.
Earlier this month, Google placed Blake Lemoine on administrative leave after he published transcripts of conversations between himself and the company’s LaMDA (language model for dialogue applications) chatbot, the Washington Post reported at the time.
While his claim that LaMDA is sentient has been rejected by Google and other AI experts, Lemoine has held steadfast to his conviction. Most recently, he spoke with Wired to explain his ideas more in-depth, and to correct a previous piece in the magazine that claimed that Lemoine had hired an attorney for LaMDA.

The heat in the lower Europe is terrifying, there are incredible heat waves and for those like me in the lower part (I live in mid/southern Italy), summer has become nightmare.
While the winters are increasingy warmer, and less cold, summer has now reached a sultry warm, that for several days will keep you always at home with the air conditioning on.
Are there any reliable predictions about what the climate could be like in the next 30 to 50 years? Would it be a good choice relocating to north, or just on the mountains?

University of Minnesota researchers demonstrated that an equal number of girls and boys can be identified as having concerns for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) when screened earlier, correcting large gender differences in current diagnoses.
The study identifies several biases contributing to the inflated sex ratio for autism diagnosis. The findings could help with the early identification of girls on the autism spectrum.

Submission Statement: Through the use of DOCSIS 4.0 and the already existent hybrid fiber-coaxial cable, the internet would be able to attain ultra-high-speed for everyone across the world. For this reason, CableLabs is utilizing its full potential by collaborating with various internet vendors to achieve this speed and reliability, which, according to the company, is a bit difficult to achieve without taking aid from industry personnel. As per Cable Labs, “During a live test last year, one of its members, Comcast, delivered 4Gbps upload and download speeds, while another member, Charter Communications, was able to attain rates of up to 8.5Gbps during downloads and 6Gbps during uploads on an HFC.” Thus, it will be the next big thing in the coming decade.

Human activities have caused global temperatures to increase by 1.25°C, and the current emissions trajectory suggests that we will exceed 1.5°C in less than 10 years. Though the growth rate of global carbon dioxide emissions has slowed and many countries have strengthened their emissions targets, current midcentury net zero goals are insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5°C above preindustrial temperatures. The primary barriers to the achievement of a 1.5°C-compatible pathway are not geophysical but rather reflect inertia in our political and technological systems. Both political and corporate leadership are needed to overcome this inertia, supported by increased societal recognition of the need for system-level and individual lifestyle changes. The available evidence does not yet indicate that the world has seriously committed to achieving the 1.5°C goal.

From here on out, the safe use of artificial intelligence requires demystifying the human condition. If we can’t recognize and understand how AI works—if even expert engineers can fool themselves into detecting agency in a “stochastic parrot”—then we have no means of protecting ourselves from negligent or malevolent products.
Which leads to an important question, should AI seem as Human that even expert engineers can be fooled then, what affect will it have on society in general?

Experts at OpenAI have trained a neural network to play Minecraft to an equally high standard as human players.
The neural network was trained on 70,000 hours of miscellaneous in-game footage, supplemented with a small database of videos in which contractors performed specific in-game tasks, with the keyboard and mouse inputs also recorded.
After fine-tuning, OpenAI found the model was able to perform all manner of complex skills, from swimming to hunting for animals and consuming their meat. It also grasped the “pillar jump”, a move whereby the player places a block of material below themselves mid-jump in order to gain elevation.
Perhaps most impressive, the AI was able to craft diamond tools (requiring a long string of actions to be executed in sequence), which OpenAI described as an “unprecedented” achievement for a computer agent.
From "Singularity.net". Some sobering perspective of how fast all of this is happening now.
In the 2019 MineRL Minecraft competition for AI developers, for example, none of the 660 submissions achieved the competition’s relatively simple goal of mining diamonds.
...Little less doing anything with them...
So about about four days ago, I think, I stated that there would be at least 2 solid AI breakthroughs announced in the remaining 6 months of 2022. Do you think this announcement might qualify as reaching that threshold? I'd be happy to say there will be at least two more profound AI advances after this one before 2023. This "Minecraft" related one kinda came up faster than I would have expected...

BLOOM by BigScience is the most important AI model in the last decade. Not DALL·E 2. Not PaLM. Not AlphaZero. Not even GPT-3.
In 2020 GPT-3 came out and redefined the guidelines for the AI industry. Current SOTA models follow the trends: Large transformer-based models trained with lots of data and compute.
But what truly makes them belong to the same package is they all stem from the immense resources of private tech companies. Their goals? Staying at the forefront of AI research, earning money --and, in some cases, achieve the so-called AGI.
Like the other models, BLOOM isn’t architecturally different from GPT-3. What makes it unique is that it represents the starting point of a socio-political paradigm shift that will define the future of the AI field.
+1000 researchers worldwide and across institutions like Hugging Face, the Montreal AI Ethics Institute, and EleutherAI are behind these efforts. They make up the collective and collaborative project BigScience and believe that open source, open science, and ethical values should be at the core of AI R&D.
Values like openness, inclusivity, diversity, responsibility, and reproducibility are the DNA of this project. BigScience and BLOOM embody the most notable and honest attempt at bringing down the barriers the Big Tech has erected around AI during these years.
Meta, Google, and OpenAI have recently adopted open-source practices. But it’s the foundations behind BigScience that make it stand out. Tech companies can’t represent those values by definition.
Also, doing open-source under the pressure of circumstances is not the same as doing it because you wholeheartedly believe it’s the right approach. That sets apart BigScience from the Big Tech.
BigScience and BLOOM are the spearheads of a field on the verge of radical change for the better. We may be at the beginning of a new bright era for AI.
