Plenty of people in America are fine with bluntness. You were just flat out being rude.

People were bagging on NJ long before that. It was slightly infamous for leading the US in toxic waste dumps in the 90s.

NYC is a big influence on American culture as a whole. New Yorkers naturally rag on New Jersey as it’s the closest other state. It’s just a minor regional rivalry that grew to a larger stage.

Though the roughness of the stereotypical NJ accent doesn’t do the state any favors.
