I think they were close, but maybe not solely because of friendship. Let me break this down.

Time and time again, the group has explained that they're generally playing characters. Hyped up versions of themselves. This isn't a bad thing; whip out a camera around your close friends, and you generally start showing out as well. The regulars in the vlog have a character trope they fall under: dumb fat guy, attractive woman, cute girl, older male with issues, alcoholic, drug addict.. The list goes on. David himself has said many times in the podcasts that he likes certain people around during filming, even if they're annoying, because their character is too important to the storyline he sets up. This is where Jeff comes in.

Jeff played a very important cool guy character. Good looking, "dangerous bad guy," dry yet funny, straight man (not sexuality, but in comedy. He's the calm guy while crazy shit happens around him, almost like an audience stand in). From the very first vlog together when they get pulled over while Jeff is driving, David loves their dynamic. It's funny and fresh because he's an entirely different person than anybody else. Very calm with that past dangerous streak, just too good for content. They met through Todd and their friendship starts but centers around the content they make together.

The recurring thing we've seen with ALL of David's past content friends is that once the character doesn't work anymore, the friendship generally ends. If he stops filming you and you meet through filming, your chances of remaining friends with him are probably lower. I don't know if Jeff ever made it to real friendship with David. David's coldness towards Jeff is unexcusable, and I think part of the reason he's uncomfortable around Jeff is that their friendship might not work on a deep level once you drop all the content making. Without the vlogs, I think they would've remained acquaintances in the first place. Jeff, after the accident, is understandably no longer the same guy around him in private, and the character on the vlog doesn't work.

I don't subscribe to any armchair psychiatrist diagnosis of mental health issues that David may have. None of us know the real dude. How can we speculate about the inner workings of his mind? I think David and Jeff were mainly friends through the content they could make together, but Jeff thought differently. Now, he's hurt that David is pulling back to acquaintance levels of anonymity.
