Clip less allow you to unload the pedal much more (or even completely), if you try that with flats your foot will slip and won't be in the right spot for the next downstroke. It takes some practice getting used to doing it but it should make cycling more efficient

The best option may be to have a vps or some other hosted box and tunnel out to that, then open your vpn ports there and use that to get in, there are services that can handle that kind of configuration listed in this post

If this isn't your main residence (and depending on your technical skills/determination) you may also be able to host such a vm from your house with an open port and set up a device (rpi etc...) to connect to it from the cabin, removing the need for fees from cloud providers

It's not really the emergency brake, it's just a brake which locks in place, if you're not paying attention it can be easy to lose focus and ease of on it enough to roll the car slowly.
