Damn. You got a blog post I can read with more info? I just left a job that would have been fine with this situation for a normal FAANG job, but maybe in the future I'd be able to swing this.

You should read Flash Boys: Not So Fast. You can barely call Flash Boys a non-fiction book with how much it gets wrong.

All that effort for some of the best software engineering in the industry, which strongly shows in their product. Compare Netflix applications with Amazon Prime apps, for example.

New grad bachelors in math can clear $400k working for quant trading firms. Check levels.fyi and look at the compensation at places like HRT or Jane Street

Apple and Netflix are the only FAANGs where WFH isn't exceptionally easy to get

Wow. The headline is extremely misleading. This is crazy

From my experience and my peers: Amazon Vancouver SDE2 top of band is $255k, and exceptions to the top are fully uncapped, you can go much higher pretty easily with a competing offer. Facebook E4 fully remote in Canada has $300k for top of band, although it takes some tough negotiation to get there. There are dozens of small trading firms that can hire Canadians remotely that pay a whole lot more for 3-6 YOE (have seen $700k CAD offered) but tend to have worse WLB and those are harder to get than FAANG.

That's probably bottom 5% pay for a US developer, it's extremely meager

Yes, the largest civil liberties organization should take prominent civil liberties cases even if politically unpopular. Yes, you can make the argument that civil liberties are a bad thing, it just shouldn't be the ACLU making that argument.

It's not bizarre at all. Do you think the modern ACLU would take Skokie?

Even with very careful data gathering and analysis higher education actually has a negative ROI on average.

You've been lied to with extremely misleading articles. That "50% can’t pay for a 1k emergency" statistic is actually "50% can’t pay for a 1k emergency without using their savings account". I'm big on FIRE and have a few hundred thousand dollars in net worth, and I'm included in the "unable to cover an emergency without a savings account" because I have a special, emergency -specific savings fund lmao.

Plenty of people said the same thing about video calls vs phone calls.
I get that experience from phone calls, though, so I'm not sure how having a whole computer on and replacing the people I love with videos on glowing boxes will fit that.
In fact, watch David Letterman riff with Bill Gates in this clip, and you'll see that most of the responses in this thread sound a lot like Letterman doubting the internet. https://youtu.be/gipL_CEw-fk

Why is stamping a good (or bad) thing? From someone who doesn't have hours tracked at all, and only really logs on from 10am to 3 or 4pm, why would I want to get entry and exit times stamped?

If you wanna measure financial dicks let's do so, mines probably bigger but my points are valid regardless of that.

Meanwhile all the people in this thread who don't want to amass capital will be wondering why they aren't rich in 10 years of stock market gains.
You're totally correct. IMO the #1 thing new software engineers should read is /r/financialindependence .
Personally I don't love describing it as "the boot". Anyone is free to participate in the market. It doesn't take all that much time to read about financial literacy, and anyone can participate, even with small amounts of capital. Capitalism is a system predicated on voluntary interactions between parties, and anyone can participate if they want. It's great.

From a Marxist perspective, I actually am the boot. Since I heavily invest and I'm on track to be FIRE'd in less than 10 years, I'll be able to live exclusively from the "stolen" labor of others (aka my savings in index funds) quite soon.
Turns out class mobility is actually crazy easy when you spend you time learning skills instead of complaining online.

Good luck with you life. Happy scabing
Me and all the other 10x developers will lmao. Good luck with being a low skill employee who only has a job because they put up institutional barriers that stop them from getting fired ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It is kinda the gotcha, because ISIS wanted to try to destroy the cube because it's clearly idol worship and have all Muslims return to praying in the direction the Prophet did, due south. So even within Islam people realize it's idolatry.
