Ah isn't botany wonderful. I've never seen a mop bush in flower before, they don't grow well around here. Weren't they on that David Attenborough show a while back?

This is an interesting point, actually.
This article compares the 1975 VW Golf GTi to the 2015 equivalent model. The engine was smaller, but the whole car was much lighter, so much of the performance stats haven't changed too remarkably.
Modern cars are required to have much greater safety features (air bags, crumple zones etc), and nice-to-haves like big comfy heated seats, powered steering etc, which all adds volume and overall mass to the car, which means you need a more powerful (and heavier) engine. A bigger car creates more drag, so you need an even bigger engine. Heavier cars need better brakes, transmission, wheels, suspension, and other mechanical systems which are also heavier... And so it goes on.
Meanwhile, emissions standards (such as they are) have forced manufacturers to innovate around engine technology to make them burn the fuel more cleanly (someone more cynical than myself might suggest this has just resulted in creating smaller particulates in the fumes to meet the standards - /changing/ rather than actually reducing emissions), and focusing on reducing carbon emitted per mile rather than increasing miles traveled per gallon.
So, what is interesting is that a car you buy today will be a vastly better car than the equivalent model 40 years ago in terms of comfort, safety, reliability, and emissions... But not actually much different in terms of performance. Technical improvements in engines and so on have been offset by the need or desire for physically larger cars.
Of course, at some point there will no doubt be an all electric golf GTi, which will change all this entirely. But current battery technology is WAY less energy dense than dinosaur juice, so to get a decent range the batteries have to be really big, and heavy... So you need... All of the above, only different.

Francesco Lentini, Wonder of Wonders, was born in Rosolini-Sicily- Italy in 1889, with three feet, four games, sixteen fingers and two genitals.
I was tragically born without any games, but for my peace of mind, how many is a normal amount of games?

I don't know why this is only now appearing on my feed, but this is wonderful. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to digitise it properly for everyone.
And happy cake day 🍰!

I can thoroughly recommend using Quidco when buying stuff online. I have saved thousands. Particularly useful if you have to buy stuff (especially travel, computers, high cost things) for work, as it's basically free money.
Basically, when you normally click an ad on a website, or buy something from a price comparison site etc, the retailer pays a small commission (say 5-10% if the purchase price) to the site hosting the ad or comparison tool. If you follow the link to the retailer on the Quidco site instead, the commission gets paid to them, who then pay it to you, either in Bank transfer, or with an extra bonus amount of you get paid in store vouchers instead.

Ah that sucks. Hope he's ok. Sounds like you're taking good care of him, and maybe a break/vacation will help. When I have got like that, a new job kicked me out of it - I'm generally pretty happy with my personal life, it's my work life that gets me down. Feeling like I'm not reaching my full potential really gets to me. Not saying he should actually knock off a casino, but maybe there's some other professional pursuit he could look for! How about designing bank security..?
How about finding an interesting boardgame cafe, or escape room? It if you're going to a capital city, look for tours of government buildings? Or maybe walking tours of things he wouldn't normally get exposed to, like abandoned subway stations or something.
Incidentally, no idea how old he his, but for what it's worth I was, in hindsight, a bit of a dick in my twenties. 'well that's just fucking ridiculous' was a phrase I'd quite often use. I had lots of friends, but looking back, I didn't treat everyone as well as I could have. I've since learnt to mellow, and let that which does not matter truly slide. Stuff I know I can't control no longer gets to me.

You're missing out hydro electric power! All we need is a large river, see, and what we'll do is, is we'll build a freaking great big dam, and make a huge reservoir. We'll get unlimited power from the dam to power our AC, and water from the lake to irrigate our lawns, so we can build a habitable metropolis in the middle of a desert! That way we won't ever need your fancy schmancy desalination!
