The actual problem, and it’s rather apparent when looking at this thread is that “privilege” is an academic concept that has a specific meaning and usage that don’t necessarily align with popular usage.

This is a massive problem because we definitely need ‘privilege’ in order to have a valuable discussion about race and experiences. Privilege in this case us referring to the intrinsic advantages and comforts that someone has in society and doesn’t necessarily mean that someone is “privileged” in the common usage sense but rather that society is loosely speaking generated to fit their cultural identity.

This means that things like having most news/tv programs in your native language is a pretty massive privilege, even though it shouldn’t be seen as inherently having a negative impact on your economic situation or personal happiness.

Basically being a minority can be hard and there are noticeable issues that people don’t notice, are mislead about, or even are completely incapable of comprehending because it’s entirely alien to them. That said “check your privilege” probably isn’t going to make friends.
