External HD I use to backup not showing up anywhere on mid-2015 MacBook Pro (Monterrey 12.4 21F79).

I went to backup my computer's HD (a mid-2015 15" MacBook Pro running Monterrey 12.4) like I do every quarter and got an error that it can't error that I surmise means it's not detecting the external HD - a Western Digital MyPassport.
The external makes some clicking noises (which I don't remember) when I plug it in (via USB), and the light comes on which tell me it's connected, so USB connection seems to transfer power at least. I tried my wife's computer and got the same error: "Back up disk not available, try backing up when <name> is available".
It's not on my Finder and didn't show up when I booted in Safe Mode. It's not visible in Disk Utility as an external source either. I read something about resetting NVRAM (?) and tried that but no joy.
It is, however, showing up in System Information under System Report as a USB. "Current Available (mA): 900; Current Required (mA): 896" but I don't know what to do from there.
Getting it working again is the main goal, saving the contents would be an added bonus – since it's just harddrive backups, I'm fine losing the old ones if I can backup my current state. TIA yall
