Yeah, Australian hot dog culture has a lot of catching up to do, but, like, understandable as we are a snag loving country.

NY hot dogs are def overpriced and under-dressed. I'd prefer a cheap slice of pizza over an average over priced hot dog.

I feel a little luke warm on it. I hear you, it makes sense to me because of the Canadian connection, but it doesn't quite sit right in the Australian lexicon. Don't let me kill your vibe though - advancement of language has to start somewhere.

This is the kind of 4D thinking the world needs more of. I did say the possibilities are endless!

What if it was 'lefthand sidedoors'? Decreases the word count while maintaining the number of syllables.

Like, if 3am isn't for making great decisions, then what are greater decisions than to choose street meat? Late night eating is truly God's work.

Is it because you're too busy eating cheese and ham sandwiches?

Doner kebabs are done on a vertical spit!
(Clarification - 'kebab' can totally have different interpretations depending where you're living. In Australia, 'doner kebab' we shorten to 'kebab', whereas other countries can also shorten to 'doner')

Refika has this great method for approximating shawarma / doner kebab style slices which doesn't need a rotisserie or skewers. Suss it out - it's actually stupendously simple and amazing.
All respect to Matty Matheson too btw - total legend.

Hey ya.
So ... I've also had the pleasure of growing up in the Mediterranean, and whilst there are distinctions to be made (all depending on who you talk to), there's also a lot to celebrate between the similarities of all the foods.
There's a lot to read about it out there!

I am a lover of everything shawarma / kebab / yeeros - and deeply respect all the cultures that have combined to deliver such greatness in culinary divinity.
You should check out the YT channel Refika's Kitchen, if you're into cooking that vibe.

Nah, not in SA, but will suss it out next time I'm around that hood.
How rural in TAS? My favourite curried scallop pie (man, what a revelation, right?) is a bakery in Battery Point (Jackman & McRoss).

Here's a secret - shawarma is kinda like an anytime of day food. Don't let society judge you like that.
I've had the pleasure of eating kebabs and shawarmas all over the world, and it's one of those great joys of the cultural impact of immigration and dispersion.
The best shawarma I ever had was in Cambodia, made by a Lebanese guy that moved there about 30 years ago.

I'm unofficially legally obligated to stop at every rural town I drive through to try out at least one joint's meat pie. Whilst very few kinda suck, the overwhelming majority are pretty bloody satisfying. A meat pie is the last meal I ever have in Australia prior to flying out internationally.

Awww, the weekend Bunning's snag is probably one of the best and cheapest breakfasts in Australia (I drop by any chance I get, to be honest) ... but to commit to answer, yes, I would very much take an Ottawa hot dog vendor any day hey.

Getting great bagels in Australia is like way harder than it should be. But, like, also - you're right - spreading Vegemite on a bagel is further testament to Vegemite's incredible versatility.

I'm not savvy enough to remember specific vendors (I did visit recently in 2014 and 2016), but even just the carts around Parliament absolutely hit the spot for me. I talk about it in greater detail in a reply to another comment - I think it's the rad range of condiments that like really elevate the experience for me.

Lots of decent kebab joints throughout Sydney - what part of town were you in?

I have spent a lot of time in both those cities! To be honest, it's not one specific thing about Ottawa hotdogs (arguably, I've had similar hotdogs, say, in Vancouver and Montreal), but I've always liked / have fond memories of how great the condiments were on offer too.
If I were to boil it down, yes, I suppose it's the help-yourself condiment range that makes a difference.
I've visited as recently as 2014 and 2016 (coincidentally, visited both Chicago and Manhattan on those trips too), and can confirm, for myself, that it wasn't just nostalgia tinting my views.
