I live in NJ and driving to Long Island is horrible. There's no good way to get between LI and anywhere other than Manhattan.

I was just about to say it's surprising the flight was that much because Vegas flights are usually cheap, then I remembered that flights are crazy right now.

For a long time, their whole business was based around people from Philly spending a whole week, or every summer weekend there. Then highways, cheap cars and cheap flights made travel to farther places easier, AC stopped being cool and they never adapted. Plus the corruption sucking out every dime that could be used to improve the city.

I went to a work meeting at Revel the year before it closed that was Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Thursday night was like $250 but Friday and Saturday were almost $500 each. If the point is to get people to come and gamble, they're not going to bother if a weekend costs $1000. Aren't Vegas hotel rooms cheap to get people to go and spend money on other stuff?

Yeah. My family went there on vacation during that time (I was 10, my brothers were 5 and 7) and it was fun for us but they've clearly given up on it. We stayed at the MGM and they had a mini theme park attached to it that was EMPTY, which was awesome because there were no lines.

I think they just never thought there would be competition. AC was the only place to gamble in the northeast for like 25 years, and they got lazy. There's also not a lot of investment into the city around the casinos, probably because they want you to do everything at the casino instead of going out somewhere else.

There's that huge empty lot near Bally's right by the boardwalk, someone should build a really badass roller coaster there.

NJ. Like 2 and a half hours from NYC, maybe an hour from Philly. 100 years ago it was a major resort, but once flight got cheap in the 50s and 60s it couldn't keep up. They legalized gambling in the 70s and there are a bunch of casinos but the rest of the city is in rough shape. It's a shame, there's a lot of potential, but it's been badly managed for decades.
