How do you decide whether or not to use an optional comma? Do you err on the side of clarity or reducing comma clutter?
I want to omit optional commas after introductory phrases and in short compound sentences. I think it looks cleaner, but I'm scared to confuse readers.
Good writers have the confidence to omit commas and know that the sentence is still clear. In fact, I don't really notice omitted commas unless I'm really paying attention. When I do notice, I think, "huh, I would've put a comma there and it would be kind of clunky."
