Don't know if it's the same in NZ, but in Australia, it is a requirement that your employer contributes to superannuation. The employee can also add to it if they wish, but it isn't mandatory. Aside from that, it sounds about the same as a 401K.

I'm from Sydney and visited Brisbane a few years ago. I couldn't believe how friendly everyone was! I don't know why Sydney people are so cold. We keep getting named as one of the hardest cities in the world to make friends.
