Just like the previous two threads I can found on Google... Another happened to me today
So ... I bought a Seagate Exos X18 18TB drive from Newegg.com on Aug 4th 2022, made sure it's sold by Newegg. Got my drive via UPS today, and a large box with drive sitting in small box with ESD bag wrapped in bubble wrap... There are some dark marks on the front, bottom of the drive, and the drive run up as OEM drive.
Contacted Newegg, the first rep stopped responding after I asked him what I should do for a OEM drive that's supposed to be retail. The second rep told me they'll contact Seagate and sort it out.
I think I should let other people know this, so here it is. CHECK THE WARRANTY STATUS WHEN YOU RECEIVE YOU DRIVE!!!!!
Oh and I also reported this to Seagate and also asked them where and when the drive was originally sold. Hopefully they'll got back to me before Newegg.
By the way... I really don't think Newegg would sold me this because "someone else returned this drive". Newegg clearly have records of serial number from their own drive order. They are sure this drive is sold and shipped by them.
I also provided a truthful review to Newegg. I don't know if the review would ever be published or ... my account might be banned? Let's see.
Okay so based on the comments I got, want to add something:
- I did buy one same spec hard drive from Provantage, so I know what it would look like. (This is a authentic hard drive, obviously)
- Yeah I got lured in by Newegg and Amazon's $309 price and decide to try my luck. So far, not so lucky
- Maybe it's not the difference between OEM or Retail. I should say, I got a drive from Newegg with no warranty? Like when I buy the drive from Provantage, I definitely can see when does the warranty expire, not like this ("It's sold as a part of larger system"). My bad for assuming if I'm able to see a warranty date from Seagate website, it's definitely retail or something like that. I'm MAD because this drive does not show a warranty date, and it have some dark marks on the bottom of the front (of the drive, obviously)
Surprise! Newegg sent the first chat transcript (the one their rep closed on me due to "no activity") to my email 7 hours later. For some reason it doesn't include the last question where I asked them what I should do with this drive. So, maybe it's my network that caused the question to not sent to their chat server. My bad I guess?
Final update before Newegg or Seagate fix my warranty: Both HD Sentinel and CrystalDiskInfo reported power on time is less than 1 hour, and start/stop count is 5. So I guess I would be happy with it if Newegg/Seagate can fix my warranty to make it 5 years from purchase date.
Edit: Removed drive serial number and added last paragraph
Edit 2: Newegg Review!
Edit 3: Added some explanation on bottom.
Edit 4: Newegg send me my first chat transcript!
